Over The Garden Wall free Christmas star craft

In this house, Over the Garden Wall season doesn’t end on Halloween. For me, the cozy wholesome joy of the show and woodland setting are so perfect for winter and Christmas time. In fact, one of the first designs I ever did was an illustration of Greg and Wirt building a frog-shaped snowman. Pssst you can find it here!

Last year I had a blast drawing the Christmas cabin scene for our calendar. Earlier this autumn I did a new collection of OTGW designs entirely lino-cut by hand. After I launched the collection and I went back through my ipad, I found a sketch that didn’t make the cut. Over on tik-tok y’all said you wanted to see it on a product, but I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do with it. But this Christmas I’ve been crafting like crazy, and I realised I wanted to give something back to all of you. So I took that sketch and developed the concept. It took six hours to design and colour this little Christmas gift for you guys, so I hope you like it!

What says Christmas like a paper star? How about a paper star featuring your favourite Over the Garden Wall characters? I’ve done a tutorial for a 5-sided star, but you can always try 6 or 8.

How to Make an OTGW 5-Sided Paper Star Using This Free Template

Creating a 5-sided paper star is a simple and fun craft! Follow these easy steps to use my template and bring your star to life.

What You'll Need:

  • The printed template: 5, 6, or 8 pieces depending on how many points you want your star to have

Download the template here

  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Optional extras:

  • Ribbon or string for hanging
  • Hot glue gun or tape for sticking the ribbon
  • LED fairy lights

Instructions:

        1. Cut Out the Template
    • Carefully cut along the edges of the printed template with scissors. Follow the outer lines to get the correct shape.

Cut the solid line connecting the two flaps in the middle.

          2. Fold Along the Dashed Lines
      • Look for the dashed lines on the template. These are the folding guides.
      • Fold each dashed line inward, ensuring the patterned side is visible. Press down firmly to make sharp folds.
              3. Shape the Star
          • After folding all the lines, you’ll notice the template starts to form a star shape. Bring the edges together as needed to ensure the folds align properly.

                  4. Glue the Edges
            • Make sure you have your star points ordered with the tabs and patterns alternating. I put all of my tabs to the right side of each point, so Greg and Wirt alternate.
              • Apply glue along the tabs marked for attachment.
              • Press and hold the glued tabs to the back of the next paper star for a few seconds to secure them.
                       5. Final Adjustments
                • Once the glue is dry, inspect your star. Adjust any folds or edges as necessary to make the shape neat and symmetrical.
                • Puff out the stars along the folds to make the shape three-dimensional. If you’re having trouble getting some folds to pop out, try pressing the fold down again for crisper edges.
                • If hanging, attach your string or ribbon with hot glue or tape.
                • If you want your star to light up, poke holes into the shape with a sharp object (carefully!) and insert LED fairy lights into the star before you seal it. Make sure you’re using lights that will not heat up to be safe. Lights that generate heat could pose a fire hazard. Please be cautious!

Your 5-sided paper star is complete! You can use it as a decoration, gift topper, or part of a larger craft project. Enjoy your creation!
